Mia is a nine-year-old girl from Turkey. Today she has her first English lesson online. It is a live lesson. Only Mia and the teacher are in the lesson. Mia sits at the computer next to her mother. She feels shy and a little nervous.
Before the lesson, her mother watched some short teacher videos. Then she chose a kind teacher for Mia.
The teacher smiles and says hello to Mia. "What's your name?" she asks. "My name is Mia," Mia says very quietly. "How old are you?" "I am nine years old."
Then the teacher shows Mia a big picture. There is a room with a table and a cat. "Where is the cat?" the teacher asks. Mia points to the cat in the picture. "It is under the table," she says.
Mia loves cats, and she has one at home. Her cat is white and very small. She tells the teacher about her cat. Then she talks about her favourite game.
Mia makes some mistakes, but the teacher does not mind. Mia laughs and starts to talk more. At the end of the lesson, she is happy. She thinks speaking English is really fun. She wants to have another lesson next week.
When Mia's mother booked her first live one-to-one English lesson, she was a little worried. Mia is nine, and she usually goes quiet when strangers talk to her. Before the lesson, her mother watched several teachers' intro videos and chose one who seemed calm and patient.
At first, Mia hardly said a word. However, the teacher did not rush her. She started with easy questions, such as "What's your name?" and "How old are you?", and then she showed Mia a picture of a living room. Mia only had to point to things and name them: a lamp, a ball, a cat under the table. Because the task was simple, she relaxed, and soon she was telling the teacher about her own cat and her favourite game.
Over the next few weeks, her mother noticed a change. Mia started looking forward to her lessons. At home, they sang English songs together, and on car journeys they played "20 questions", where one person thinks of something and the others ask questions to guess it. Sometimes Mia told a short story from three pictures in her book.
In the beginning, her stories were just a few words for each picture. Gradually, she began to join her ideas with "and", "but" and "because". "The boy is hungry because he didn't eat breakfast," she said one evening, and her mother smiled.
Mia still makes mistakes, of course. Although she used to worry about them, she now just corrects herself and carries on. As a result, she speaks more and more. Her mother puts it simply: "She has become more confident, and she enjoys English now."
Ask a parent what they want from their child's English lessons, and many will mention grammar or test results. Yet for a shy nine-year-old like Mia, the real breakthrough had little to do with worksheets. It came from something far simpler: regular, meaningful conversation with an adult who was genuinely interested in what she had to say.
In her first live one-to-one lesson, Mia was visibly uneasy. For many children, being the centre of attention is frightening, and a video call can feel like a spotlight. Her teacher clearly understood this. Rather than testing her, she broke the ice with questions Mia could answer without thinking, then moved on to a picture in which Mia only had to point and name. Within minutes, the conversation had drifted to Mia's cat and her favourite game, topics she actually cared about. That shift matters, because children tend to be most motivated when an activity feels relevant to their own lives.
Worksheets certainly have their place. They help children notice patterns and remember words. What they cannot do, however, is give a child the experience of being understood in another language. Every time Mia gets her message across, even imperfectly, she gathers fresh evidence that English is something she can use, not merely something she studies.
Routine plays an equally important role. Mia's week now follows a predictable rhythm: her lessons, songs at home, a round of "20 questions" in the car and the occasional story told from a set of pictures. Knowing what to expect lowers anxiety, and a calm child is far more willing to take risks with language.
Over the past few weeks, Mia has gradually come out of her shell. She has started linking ideas with "because", correcting herself mid-sentence and, perhaps most tellingly, laughing at her own mistakes. None of this happened overnight, and none of it came from pressure. It grew from small, consistent opportunities to speak, offered patiently, until confidence became a habit rather than a hope.

6 maddelik kontrol listesi

- point to: göstermek, işaret etmek. *Mia points to the cat in the picture.*
- look forward to: dört gözle beklemek. *Mia started looking forward to her lessons.*
- break the ice: buzları eritmek. *She broke the ice with questions Mia could answer without thinking.*
- come out of one's shell: kabuğundan çıkmak, açılmak. *Mia has gradually come out of her shell.*
Dil notu: "She has become more confident"
"Mia became confident" yalnızca geçmişte olanı söyler; "Mia has become more confident" ise değişimin şu an da görüldüğünü vurgular. Metindeki "has started" ve "has come out of her shell" da aynı işi görür.
Cambridge, çocuk konuşmak istemediğinde hayal kırıklığı gösterilmemesini önerir, çünkü ilgi odağı olmak korkutucu olabilir.
Evde nasıl pratik yapılır?
- British Council'ın önerdiği gibi düzenli günlerde 10-20 dakikalık, hep aynı yapıda kısa oturumlar planla.
- Birlikte şarkı söyleyin, arabada "20 questions" oynayın, üç resimden kısa bir hikâye anlatın.
- Çocuk utangaçsa basit bir kukla kullan, hatalarını kabul et ve oturumu kendini iyi hissederek bitirmesini sağla.
- Ücretsiz kaynaklar: British Council LearnEnglish Kids ve Cambridge'in çevrimiçi oyunları.
