On Saturday, we can go to the cinema or the park. Either place is fine for me. We can go to either the cinema or the park.
Ali does not like fish. Ece does not like fish. Neither of them likes fish.
Remember:
- both = two together
- either = one of two
- neither = not one and not the other
Imagine you are choosing between two job offers. Both companies offer a good salary, and both are close to your home. That is the easy part.
Now the differences. You can accept either offer, but not the two together. Either company would be a sensible choice, so you decide to visit each office first.
After the visits, you are disappointed. Neither office has natural light, and neither manager seemed interested in your questions. In the end, you accept neither offer.
Notice the grammar. "Both" takes a plural verb: both companies are large. "Either" and "neither" are followed by a singular noun and usually a singular verb: neither office has light. Also notice that "neither" is already negative, so we never say "neither office doesn't have light".
These three determiners all refer to exactly two items, yet they distribute meaning quite differently, and the distinction becomes especially visible in agreement and negation.
"Both" is inclusive and therefore plural: both proposals were rejected. "Either" selects one of the two without specifying which, so it normally takes a singular verb, although in informal speech you will often hear a plural after "either of". "Neither" excludes the pair entirely and carries its own negation, which is why pairing it with "not" produces a double negative that careful speakers avoid.
The correlative structures deserve attention too. In "either ... or" and "neither ... nor" constructions, the verb traditionally agrees with the nearer subject: neither the manager nor the employees were informed. Position matters as well. Starting a sentence with "neither" or "nor" triggers inversion, as in "Neither did I", a pattern that learners frequently overlook when agreeing with a negative statement.
