Small talk is a short, friendly talk. People talk about the weather, work or the weekend.
Here is an example.
"Hi! How are you?" "I am fine, thanks. And you?" "Good, thank you. It is cold today." "Yes, it is. I like warm days."
Do not say only "yes" or "no". Say one more sentence. Then ask a question.
"Do you like your job?" "Yes, I do. I work with nice people. What about you?"
Smile and listen. Small talk is easy when you practise.
Small talk is the light conversation people have before a meeting starts, while waiting for coffee, or when they meet someone new. It may seem unimportant, but it is how relationships begin.
The first rule is to be prepared. People almost always ask the same things: where you are from, what you do, and how your weekend was. If you have short answers ready, you will not panic.
The second rule is to add a detail. Instead of saying "I'm an engineer", try "I'm an engineer, so I spend most of my day solving problems." That extra sentence gives the other person something to respond to.
Finally, return the question. "How about you?" is the simplest way to keep a conversation alive. You do not need to be interesting. You only need to be interested.
Small talk has a poor reputation, often dismissed as empty chatter, yet it performs a crucial social function. Those few minutes of conversation about the weather or the weekend establish trust, signal goodwill, and frequently determine how the more serious discussion that follows will unfold.
For non-native speakers, the difficulty is rarely vocabulary. It is the unpredictability. A useful strategy is to treat small talk as a pattern rather than a performance. Most exchanges follow a familiar rhythm: an observation, a brief personal comment, and a question handed back to the other person. Mastering that rhythm matters far more than finding something clever to say.
It also helps to soften your language. Native speakers rarely fire off direct questions. They cushion them with a remark such as "That sounds fascinating" before asking for more. Agreeing first, then adding a thought of your own, keeps the exchange warm and effortless. In short, good small talk is less about speaking well and more about making the other person comfortable.

Sohbeti sürdürmenin 5 yolu
- 1Hazırlıklı ol. Nerelisin, ne iş yapıyorsun, hafta sonu ne yaptın sorularına birer cümlelik cevap hazırla.
- 2Kısa bir ayrıntı ekle. "I'm a teacher" yerine "I'm a teacher, so my days are never boring" de.
- 3Sorunu yumuşat. Soru sormadan önce kısa bir yorum yap: "That's interesting! How long have you been doing that?"
- 4Önce katıl. Biri "Cold today, isn't it?" dediğinde "Yes, it is. I hope it gets warmer soon" diye cevap ver.
- 5Soruyu geri çevir. "How about you?" her sohbeti kurtarır.

En yaygın cevaplar "I'm good, thanks. And you?" ve "Not bad, how about you?" şeklindedir. Uzun bir açıklama beklenmez; kısa cevap verip soruyu geri çevirmek yeterlidir.
Sık sorulan sorulara önceden kısa cevaplar hazırlamak heyecanı azaltır. Ayrıca aynı kalıpları bir öğretmenle birkaç kez tekrar etmek, gerçek sohbetlerde otomatik hale gelmesini sağlar.
