Kısaca
- İngilizce gramer konularını seviyene göre sırayla çalışmak, her yeni yapıyı sağlam bir temele oturtmana yardım eder.
- Aynı yapı farklı seviyelerde farklı anlamlar kazanır: 'may' A2'de olasılık, B1'de resmî izin, C1'de 'may well' olarak öğrenilir.
- Gramer ezberle değil, kullanımla kalıcı olur; ileri seviyede yeni hatalar yapmak gerilediğin anlamına gelmez.

My name is Elif. I am thirty-four, and I live in Izmir. I work in a small office. Three months ago, I started to learn English grammar again.
First, I took a short level test. My result was A2. My teacher said, 'Start with the basic things.' So I studied 'to be', the present simple and 'can'.
Every evening, I wrote a short diary. 'I am tired. I work every day. I can cook, but I cannot swim.' My sentences were short, but they were correct.
One morning, I looked at the grey sky. I wrote a new sentence: 'It may rain today.' The word 'may' was new for me. Here it means 'maybe'.
In the second month, I learned some new forms. I wrote an email to my manager: 'May I leave at four on Friday?' This time 'may' was very polite.
Then I read my diary again and saw a problem. I always used the same easy words, like 'can' and 'I think'.
In the third month, I tried longer sentences. I made new mistakes, and I felt sad. My teacher smiled. 'That is good,' she said. 'You are trying harder things now.'
For me, grammar is not a list now. I use it every day, and it grows.
Three months ago, Elif, a 34-year-old office worker from Izmir, decided to take English grammar seriously. She had studied it at school, but she had never been sure which topics came first. So, first, she took a placement test, which put her at A2, and she agreed on a plan with her teacher.
In the first month, she went back to the basics: the verb 'to be', the present simple and 'can'. She kept a short diary every evening. One cloudy morning she wrote, 'It may rain today', and her teacher pointed out that 'may' here simply shows weak possibility.
By the second month, she had moved on to the present perfect and conditionals. 'If I practise every day, I will improve,' she wrote, and later, 'If I lived in London, I would speak more.' She also found out that 'may' has another meaning. When she needed to leave work early, she emailed her manager: 'May I leave at four on Friday?' It sounded formal and polite, which was exactly what she wanted.
However, when she looked back at her diary, she noticed something surprising. Although she knew many structures, she kept using the same few, especially 'can' and 'I think'. She was sticking to the language she felt comfortable with.
In the third month, she pushed herself to try longer, more complex sentences. Naturally, she made new mistakes, and at first this worried her. Her teacher explained that these errors were a sign of progress, not failure, because she was taking more risks.
Now Elif sees grammar differently. It is not a list to memorise but a tool that grows stronger the more she uses it.
When Elif, a 34-year-old office worker in Izmir, returned to English after years away from the classroom, she assumed grammar was a body of rules to be memorised in the right order. Three months later, she is far less sure. What changed her mind was not a textbook but her own diary.
She began, on her teacher's advice, where her placement test put her: at A2. The first month was deliberately unambitious, built around 'to be', the present simple and 'can'. Her entries were short and plain, yet one of them marked a small milestone. Glancing out at a grey sky, she wrote 'It may rain today', using 'may' for the first time to express weak possibility.
The second month brought the present perfect and conditionals, and with them a second life for that same modal verb. Needing to leave work early, she drafted an email asking, 'May I leave at four on Friday?', and realised that 'may' could also carry formal permission. Rereading her diary, however, she spotted a pattern she had not expected: for all the structures she had studied, she leaned heavily on a handful she felt comfortable using, 'can' and 'I think' above all.
It is this observation that reshaped her view. Not until she started forcing less familiar forms into her writing did they begin to feel natural. Grammar, she now suspects, is less a set of rules learnt by heart than a set of patterns that settle in through repeated use. The more often a form does real work for her, the more firmly it seems to take root.
The third month was messier. Experimenting with inversion and cleft sentences, she made mistakes she would never have made at A2, and her accuracy appeared to slip. Her teacher reassured her that this was par for the course: learners who attempt more complex language naturally run a greater risk of error, which is not the same as standing still.
Elif may well never stop making mistakes, and she has made peace with that. What she wants now is not perfection but range, and range, she has discovered, only comes through trial and error.

Seviye seviye gramer konuları
| Seviye | Temel konular |
|---|---|
| A1 | to be, Simple Present, there is/are, can, çoğul isimler, iyelik sıfatları |
| A2 | Simple Past, Present Continuous, going to, karşılaştırma sıfatları, should, olasılık için may |

Aynı yapı, farklı seviye: may
English Grammar Profile bir yapının her anlamını ayrı bir seviyeye yerleştirir. Elif'in hikâyesinde de bunu görüyorsun:
- A2, zayıf olasılık: *It may rain today.* (Bugün yağmur yağabilir.)
- B1, resmî izin: *May I leave at four on Friday?* (Cuma günü dörtte çıkabilir miyim?)
- C1, may well: *Elif may well never stop making mistakes.* (Elif büyük ihtimalle hata yapmayı hiç bırakmayacak.)
Metinden 4 faydalı kalıp
- 1feel comfortable using: kullanırken rahat hissetmek. *I only use the tenses I feel comfortable using.*
- 2take root: kök salmak, yerleşmek. *A pattern takes root when you use it often.*
- 3par for the course: olağan, beklenen. *New mistakes at C1 are par for the course.*
- 4trial and error: deneme yanılma. *Range only comes through trial and error.*
Türk öğrencilerin sık yaptığı hatalar
- *I am agree* demek (doğrusu: *I agree*).
- Üçüncü tekil şahısta -s takısını unutmak: *She work* yerine *She works*.
- Present Perfect yerine Simple Present kullanmak: *I live here for five years* yerine *I have lived here for five years*.
Gramer konuşmada nasıl kalıcı olur?
Araştırmalar, sık kullanılan biçim ve anlam eşleşmelerinin zihinde gramer bilgisi olarak yerleştiğini, ne kadar çok kullanılırsa o kadar sağlam oturduğunu gösteriyor. Öğrenciler ayrıca rahat hissettikleri yapılara yaslanır, tıpkı Elif'in 'can' ve 'I think' alışkanlığı gibi.
