Elif lives in Izmir. She is thirty-five years old. She reads English books and understands them. But she does not speak English. She is afraid of making mistakes.
Last year, a tourist asked her a question. "Do you speak English?" he said. Elif answered, "Yes, a little," and then stopped. Her face was red and hot.
That night, she told her husband about the tourist. "I know the words, but I cannot speak," she said to him. He told her to find a teacher.
Elif started online lessons with a teacher. In the first lesson, she spoke very little. She said to her teacher, "Please speak more slowly." The teacher smiled and spoke slowly.
Every week, Elif spoke a little more. She made many mistakes, and that was normal. Her teacher did not laugh at her. She told Elif the right words.
Now Elif speaks English in every lesson. Last month, she spoke to a tourist in the street. She told him the way to the museum. It was easy for her.
Elif feels happy and proud now. She tells her friends the same thing: "Do not wait. Start speaking today."
For years, Elif could read English easily. She understood articles, emails and even novels. However, whenever someone spoke to her in English, her mind went blank. As a result, she avoided every situation where she might have to speak.
Things changed at work. Her company started working with a team in London, and one day her manager told her that she would join a video call. Elif said to her colleague, "To tell the truth, I'm terrified." Although she knew the grammar perfectly, she had hardly ever spoken a word out loud.
She decided to take action and signed up for one-to-one online lessons. Her teacher noticed something interesting straight away. "You speak English," he told her. "You just don't speak in English yet." In other words, she knew the language, but she had not used it in real conversation.
This month, Elif has spoken English every single day. Some days she only talks for ten minutes, but she never skips a day. She has also learned the difference between speak and talk. When there was a problem with an order, she asked to speak to the manager, which sounded polite and serious. With her new friends from the online class, however, she simply talks, and once they talked all night about films and travel.
The video call finally came. Elif did not speak perfectly, and she asked people to repeat things. Nevertheless, the London team understood her, and afterwards her manager said to her, "You did really well."
Looking back, Elif realises that knowledge was never her problem. Practice was.
Elif had always been, strictly speaking, a competent user of English. She could follow a podcast, skim a report and spot a grammatical slip in someone else's email. Yet the moment she was expected to open her mouth, that competence seemed to evaporate. Her silence in meetings spoke volumes, and not in the way she would have liked: colleagues assumed she had nothing to say.
Generally speaking, learners like Elif do not lack knowledge. What holds them back is a quieter, more stubborn obstacle: the fear of sounding foolish. Reading is private and forgiving, since nobody watches you reach for a word. Speaking, by contrast, happens in real time and in front of others, and every hesitation feels like a public confession of failure.
When a friend remarked that adults simply cannot learn to speak a new language with ease, Elif heard herself reply, "Speak for yourself." It was half a joke, but it sounded like a decision. Within a week she had booked one-to-one lessons with a teacher who, crucially, let her make mistakes and told her calmly what to fix afterwards, rather than interrupting her mid-sentence.
The shift was gradual. At first she rehearsed every answer in her head before saying it aloud. Later she learned to tolerate the small pauses that native speakers barely notice. She began to speak her mind in lessons, disagreeing with her teacher about films and politics, and discovered that a slightly clumsy opinion is far more interesting than a perfectly formed silence.
Months later, when she presented her team's results to the London office, nobody commented on her accent. They were too busy discussing her ideas. She had told herself for years that she would speak once her English was good enough; it turned out that speaking was precisely what made it good enough.
Actions speak louder than words, as the saying goes, and in language learning the action is, quite literally, the words. No amount of silent study can replace the experience of saying something, being understood and trying again.

Sık sorulan sorular
Speak temel olarak "konuşmak" demektir. Bunun yanında bir dili konuşabilmek (Do you speak English?), konuşma yapmak ve bir şeyden söz etmek anlamlarında da kullanılır. Hangi anlamda kullanıldığını cümlenin bağlamından anlarsın.
Speak düzensiz bir fiildir: 2. hali spoke, 3. hali spoken. Üçüncü tekil şahısta speaks, -ing halinde speaking olur. Örnek: "I spoke to my teacher" ve "I have spoken English every day."
İkisi benzer anlamlıdır ama speak biraz daha resmidir. Bir amaçla biriyle görüşürken "speak to the manager", arkadaşça sohbet ederken "talk" daha doğaldır. "They talked all night" doğal bir cümledir, bunu speak ile söylemek kulağa tuhaf gelir.
Kısa ve doğal cevaplar "Yes, I do." ya da metindeki Elif gibi "Yes, a little." olur. Bu soruda speak bir dili bilmek anlamındadır, bu yüzden dili bilip bilmediğini sorarken "Are you speaking English?" denmez. Anlamakta zorlanırsan "Please speak more slowly." diyebilirsin.
