- Çekimi speak up, spoke up, spoken up şeklindedir; "Could you speak up a bit?" ise birinden kibarca daha yüksek sesle konuşmasını istemenin doğal bir yoludur.
Toplantıda biri sana "Could you speak up?" dediğinde senden ne istiyor: daha yüksek ses mi, yoksa fikrini mi? Speak up iki anlamlı bir ifade. Aşağıda utangaç Elif'in hikâyesini üç seviyede okuyabilirsin. Kendi seviyeni seç, sonra Türkçe rehberde kalıpları ve farkları adım adım incele.

Elif started a new job last year. She was a very quiet person. She did not talk much at work.
On her first Monday, there was a big meeting. Elif sat at the back of the room. She talked about her ideas, but her voice was very soft. A man at the front said, "Sorry, could you speak up, please?" Elif felt nervous. Then she spoke up, and everyone heard her.
A few weeks later, there was a problem. A report was late. The manager was angry with Tom, a young colleague. But it was not Tom's mistake. The computer system did not work that day.
Nobody said anything. The room was silent. Then Elif spoke up for Tom. She told the manager about the computer problem. The manager listened and said thank you.
After that, Elif felt stronger. In the next meeting, she spoke up about a problem in the team. People had too much work every week. Her colleagues agreed with her.
Now Elif speaks up in every meeting. She is still a quiet person, but she is not silent.
When Elif joined a marketing company, she had always been the quiet one. At university she rarely asked questions, and in her first team meetings she spoke so softly that colleagues kept asking her to speak up. "Could you speak up a bit? We can't hear you at the back," her manager said kindly. Although she felt embarrassed, she raised her voice and finished her point.
However, speaking louder was only the beginning. A month later, a project went wrong and the director blamed Tom, a new designer. Elif knew that Tom had followed the instructions he was given. The room went silent, because nobody wanted to get involved. So Elif decided she had to speak up for him. She calmly explained what had really happened, and the director agreed to look into it again.
That day taught her that "speak up" has two meanings. Sometimes it simply means talking more loudly. At other times, it means saying what you think instead of staying silent, especially to defend someone or to point out a problem. Soon she began to speak up about other issues too, such as unrealistic deadlines, and she even spoke up against a plan to cancel the team's training days.
Her friend Can works for a local newspaper, and he once spoke out against a decision by the city council. Speaking out is a little different: it usually means stating your opinion in public, often against something, and it takes real courage. Elif has not spoken out in public yet. Still, she has learned not to hold back in meetings, and her team now relies on her honest opinions.
For most of her first year at the company, Elif treated meetings as something to survive rather than contribute to. She would sit near the door, offer the occasional remark in a voice barely above a murmur, and watch colleagues lean forward and ask, not unkindly, whether she could speak up. It was the most literal sense of the phrase, a request to talk louder, and it only made her want to say less.
Her silence was hardly unusual. People stay quiet in meetings for all sorts of reasons: fear of sounding foolish, respect for seniority, or a reluctance to rock the boat when everyone else seems to agree. The cost of that silence, however, often remains invisible until something goes wrong.
For Elif, that moment came when a colleague, Tom, was blamed for a missed deadline that was not his fault. She could have bitten her tongue, as she usually did. Instead, she spoke up for him, setting out the facts calmly and without accusing anyone. Nobody applauded, but the conversation shifted, and the blame was quietly withdrawn.
That experience revealed the second, more demanding meaning of speak up: expressing your opinion when silence would be easier, particularly to defend someone or to draw attention to a problem. Her manager, to his credit, began ending meetings with a simple invitation: "If you disagree, please speak up." Disagreement, framed politely ("I see it slightly differently" or "Could we look at the risks first?"), turned out to be far less dangerous than Elif had imagined.
It is worth separating this from speaking out. To speak out against a decision usually means taking a public stand, often in opposition to people with more power, and it can require considerable courage. Speaking up is generally smaller in scale, yet it is where that courage is first practised.
A team in which people speak up catches mistakes earlier, shares the workload more fairly and makes better decisions. Elif still prefers listening to talking, but she no longer confuses being quiet with being silent.

Speak up ne demek?
Metinde Elif'in yöneticisi tam olarak bunu yapıyor.
Anlam 2: Fikrini söylemek, birini savunmak
Sessiz kalmak yerine düşündüğünü açıkça söylemek. Speak up for someone, Cambridge'e göre birini desteklemek, özellikle onun hakkında iyi şeyler söyleyerek arkasında durmaktır. Nesne başka biri, bir fikir ya da kendin olabilir: speak up for yourself.
